Two Lake Worth Beach Officials Honored with 2026 Home Rule Hero Award

The Florida League of Cities (FLC), the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments, recently recognized two Lake Worth Beach officials with the 2026 Home Rule Hero Award: Mayor Betty Resch and Commissioner Sarah Malega. They were honored for their unwavering dedication and impactful advocacy during the 2026 Legislative Session in support of Home Rule—the ability of local governments to make decisions that best serve their communities.

Each official worked diligently throughout the session, engaging with lawmakers, sharing critical local data and real-world examples, and helping ensure that Lake Worth Beach’s voice was heard in Tallahassee.

“Local voices matter, and during the 2026 Legislative Session, these leaders made sure those voices were heard,” said FLC Chief of Legislative Affairs Casey Cook. “By engaging early, often, and thoughtfully, they helped elevate the municipal perspective and reinforce the importance of local decision-making. We sincerely appreciate their dedication and are proud to recognize their advocacy on behalf of Florida’s cities.”

Mayor Betty Resch, a strong advocate for sustainable development and community empowerment, said, “Home Rule is fundamental to responsive and accountable government. It ensures local leaders have the authority needed to address the unique challenges and opportunities within our city.”

Commissioner Sarah Malega, a three-time Home Rule award recipient and longtime champion of equity and inclusion, highlighted the importance of collaboration, stating, “This recognition reflects the importance of our Commission engaging other electeds and building relationships at every level of government. Working with federal and state leaders—across all perspectives—to help them understand how their decisions impact our community is essential. I’m proud to stand alongside our residents and business owners, advocating on their behalf."

The Home Rule Hero Award is presented annually to local government officials—both elected and nonelected—who consistently respond to the League’s requests to engage with state legislators and champion the importance of Home Rule.
