City of Lake Worth Beach Celebrates CDBG Recommendation for City-Owned Compass Community Center Building Renovation
Palm Beach County Recommends Community Development Block Grant Funding to Update Facility at 201 N. Dixie Highway.
The City of Lake Worth Beach is pleased to share that Palm Beach County has reversed its earlier decision and is now recommending the City for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to support the long-awaited renovation of the city-owned Compass Community Center building at 201 N. Dixie Highway. This recommendation represents a significant milestone for the City and its residents, moving the project closer to delivering a revitalized community space.
The Compass Community Center has long served as a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ community life in Lake Worth Beach, providing vital programs, services, and gathering space for residents of all backgrounds. The recommended CDBG funding will allow the City to undertake renovations to improve the facility’s air conditioning systems and roof – ensuring it continues to serve the City for generations to come.
The Community Development Block Grant program, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. Palm Beach County’s recommendation reflects the City’s commitment to investing in its community assets and serving its most vulnerable residents.
Mayor Betty Resch stated, “This CDBG recommendation from Palm Beach County is wonderful news for the entire Lake Worth Beach community. This recommendation brings us one step closer to making meaningful upgrades at the Compass Community Center, including a new air conditioning system and roof, to improve comfort and accessibility for all who use the facility. We are deeply grateful to Palm Beach County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo for recognizing the importance of this project and for the County's partnership in making Lake Worth Beach a stronger, more vibrant city for all who call it home.”
City Commissioner Sarah Malega added, “The Compass Community Center building renovation has been a top priority for our City, and receiving this CDBG recommendation is a tremendous step forward. The planned improvements, specifically the installation of a modern HVAC system, will significantly enhance the functionality of the Compass Community Center for our residents and visitors.”
Further details regarding the renovation timeline, scope of work, and community engagement opportunities will be announced as the project advances.
